The Scale Guide
What those ratios actually mean — and how to choose.
Every diecast model is built to a scale — a ratio describing how much smaller the model is than the real car. A 1:18 model is one-eighteenth the size of the actual vehicle. The larger the second number, the smaller the model.
Common scales
1:64 — pocket size
About 7–8 cm long. The classic "Hot Wheels" size — affordable, highly collectible, and easy to display in volume.
1:43 — the collector's standard
Around 10–12 cm. A long-standing European standard with huge variety and fine detailing for the size.
1:24 — detailed mid-size
Roughly 18–20 cm. A noticeable step up in detail, often with opening doors and bonnets.
1:18 — the showpiece
About 25–28 cm. The sweet spot for serious collectors: opening panels, detailed interiors and engines, and a real presence on the shelf.
1:12 — the centrepiece
30 cm and up. Flagship models with the finest detail — and the price to match.
Which should you choose?
- Tight on space or building a large set? Go 1:64 or 1:43.
- Want a detailed display piece? 1:18 is the most popular choice.
- Chasing the ultimate detail? 1:12.
